Growing worries about the resurgence of the disease hit investors' risk appetite, causing Asian stock markets and oil prices to plummet.

Another factor that supported the price of gold was the 0.2% drop in the US dollar index.

According to Reuters, new statistics show that China's industrial production grew less than expected in May, reflecting the effects of the coronavirus outbreak on the country's economic activity.

In other precious metals, silver for immediate delivery fell 0.3 percent to $ 17.39 an ounce. An ounce of palladium traded down 0.1 percent at $ 1,916.57 an ounce. Platinum for immediate delivery stood at $ 805.17 an ounce.
